Vehicles Affected: Approximately 342,000 model-year 2014-16 Kia Soul and Soul EV hatchbacks
The Problem: The pinion plug may allow the pinion gear to separate from the steering gear assembly, which could result in lost steering, increasing the risk of a crash. Kia noted that vehicles previously remedied under older an older recall are being recalled again.
The Fix: Dealers will inspect and secure the pinion plug or replace the steering gear assembly, as necessary, for free.
What Owners Should Do: Kia will begin notifying owners Nov. 16. Owners can call the automaker at 800-333-4542, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
