Jeep redesigned its Compass compact SUV for 2017 with radical new styling and a bump up in the safety department — both in terms of features and crash-test scores. The new Compass also earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's second highest honor, Top Safety Pick, unlike the previous version.

The 2017 Compass earned good ratings in all five of the agency's crashworthiness tests — small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints and seats — and a superior rating for front crash prevention. According to IIHS, a Compass equipped with the optional front crash prevention system avoided collisions in 12 mph and 25 mph track tests.
The Compass fell short of the higher Top Safety Pick Plus badge due to its headlights. When equipped with the optional high-intensity-discharge headlights, the Compass earns a marginal headlight rating; the SUV's base halogen headlights are rated poor. To qualify for a Top Safety Pick Plus award, a vehicle must have good ratings in all five tests, an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention, and an acceptable or good headlight rating.
Competitors like the 2017 Honda CR-V and 2017 Toyota RAV4 earned the higher Plus designation, but others, like the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan and 2017 Ford Escape, failed to earn either Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick Plus status.
