Chevrolet has jazzed up its Tahoe full-size SUV for 2018 with an RST appearance package that includes 22-inch wheels and the availability of a 420-horsepower, 6.2-liter V-8 mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission, a new powertrain combination. The result, Chevy says, is zero-to-60 mph in 5.7 seconds and the muscle to tow up to 8,400 pounds.

Gas mileage, though, drops from a combined city/highway figure of 19 mpg to 17 mpg compared with the standard 5.3-liter V-8. Filling the 26-gallon fuel tank with either Used Engine is going to be a significant expense, despite gas prices having fallen for five weeks in a row.
The national average for regular gas was $2.43 on Thursday, according to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report, down 2 cents from a week ago and 10 cents from a month ago, though it was up a penny from Wednesday.
- That means filling a Tahoe from empty would cost $63.18 based on the national average.
- In Missouri, though, which had the lowest average price for regular, $2.15, the fill-up would cost $55.90. In four other states, where the average price was $2.17 (Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina and Texas) it would cost $56.42.
- In states with the highest prices, Hawaii ($3.29), Alaska ($3.17) and California ($3.08), gassing up a Tahoe would cost $85.54, $82.42 and $80.08, respectively.
Pump prices fell in most states the past week, with AAA showing California and Missouri as the biggest losers: Regular fell 4 cents and 5 cents in those states, respectively. Premium gas dropped 2 cents to a national average of $2.97, and diesel fuel was virtually unchanged at $2.83.
In Ohio, though, regular rose 5 cents and in Michigan it jumped 11 cents (a week after falling 6 cents). Price volatility is common in both states, as well as others in the Great Lakes area.
